Inspired by the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, Maggie Bisset started coaching recreational gymnastics to boys and girls at the original Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh. In the following year, Maggie formally established Meadowbank Gymnastics Club and the club was the first to offer gymnastics at all levels of ability for both boys and girls in the whole of the wider Lothians.
Over the years the club has produced many East of Scotland and Scottish Champions, and we have also had gymnasts in Scottish and British squads who have represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.
With the announcement by the City of Edinburgh Council that Meadowbank Stadium was to be redeveloped, the club decided to explore the possibility of acquiring its own dedicated gym space. With the help of parents and volunteers, and after many fund-raising activities, the club’s steering committee finally found a suitable space and with the assistance of a loan from Social Investment Scotland, we were finally able to open our own dedicated facility in a unit on the Mayfield Industrial Estate near Dalkeith.
The gym is fully equipped with the same world class equipment used by international athletes when competing at competitions, including the Olympics! we deliver classes for pre-school and beginners up to performance level competitive gymnasts in a safe, fun and friendly environment.
50 years on, our Coaching Team is still lead by our Head Coach, Maggie Bisset, who was recently awarded with a lifetime achievement award by Scottish Gymnastics. She is supported by a team of experienced, dedicated coaches and volunteers and we look forward to welcoming your child at our gym!
